Tiger Mountain Site

The Tiger Mountain Site is a cultural relic protection unit of Liaoning Province.

The eastern starting point of the Tiger Mountain section of the Great Wall is located at Tiger Mountain by the Yalu River in Tiger Village, Tiger Mountain Township, Kuandian Manchu Autonomous County, Dandong City, at 124°30′ east longitude and 40°13′ north latitude. To the east and south, Tiger Mountain borders the Yalu River; to the west lies ????, and to the south lies ????. The mountain was historically battered by fierce battles. On the mountaintop, there are remnants of ancient walls and battlements that have suffered considerable erosion. From the summit, you can see broken sections of the Great Wall extending intermittently over 1,000 meters along the wall’s route, with a total of five wall platforms discovered along this stretch.

Both the Ming History and the Ming Veritable Records document this site. The Ming History states that the Great Wall of China starts at the Yalu River in the east and ends at Jiayu Pass in the west. The Ming Xianzong Veritable Records mention the construction of the eastern wall from Kaiyuan to the Yalu River during the 15th year of the Chenghua Emperor’s reign. This site holds significant archaeological and cultural value, as well as practical importance, clarifying the exact starting location of the Great Wall. Tiger Mountain was once an important ancient battlefield in the Andong region: battles from the Tang Dynasty’s war against Goguryeo at the Yalu River, the First Sino-Japanese War (First Sino-Japanese War), and the Russo-Japanese War all raged here. It also served as a key waterway dock connecting the ancient Bohai State to the Central Plains of China.

Protected area: To the east and south, up to the edge of the Yalu River; to the west, up to the Ai River; to the north, within the channel from the Dankuan Highway to the No. 15 bus terminus and the access road to the Ai River embankment. Beyond the Dankuan Highway to the north, including the area along the old border wall up to the boundary between Dandong and Benxi, the outer edges of the wall foundations on both sides of the Great Wall extend 50 meters inward.

Construction control zone: A secondary construction control zone extends 500 meters beyond the protected area to the north of Tiger Mountain; a primary construction control zone extends 50 meters beyond the protected area along the Great Wall wall body.
