Itinerary Overview
D1–D2: Harare → D3: Great Zimbabwe → D4: Matobo & Bulawayo → D5–D6: Hwange National Park → D7: Victoria Falls Town. The southern section is mainly overland; you can fly or take a private transfer between Hwange and the Falls.
D1–D2 Harare and Surroundings
- D1: Arrive in Harare → Explore the historic downtown area and the National Archives → Visit Mbare Musika market for local vibes → Dinner featuring sadza with stew.
- D2: Visit the National Gallery and Harare Gardens → Head to the countryside to see balancing rocks and visit stone carving workshops → Overnight on an overnight bus or stay in Harare.
D3 Great Zimbabwe (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
Head south to Masvingo early (around 4 hours), then spend half a day exploring the three main sections of the ruins: the Valley Complex, the Great Enclosure, and the Hill Complex. Watch the sunset over the stone walls in the evening, and stay at a lodge near the site.
D4 Matobo Hills (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
Travel west to Bulawayo, then head into Matobo National Park in the afternoon: explore the Bushman rock art caves (Nswatugi, Silozwane), see balancing rocks, and join a licensed guide for a white rhino walk. Stay overnight in Matobo or Bulawayo.
D5–D6 Hwange National Park
- D5: Drive north to Hwange (around 3 hours), go on two game drives in the afternoon and evening, focusing on spotting elephant herds, lion prides, and wild dogs.
- D6: Early morning waterhole vigil (animals gather around water sources day and night in the dry season) → Full-day safari → Overnight at a campsite inside the park, listening to lions roar.
D7 Victoria Falls Town
Take an early morning transfer to Victoria Falls Town (about 2 hours by road), walk the Falls trails in the afternoon to see all 16 viewpoints, enjoy a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River in the evening, and stay in town or depart directly.
Tips
- The stretch from Harare to Masvingo to Bulawayo is long; hiring a private car or joining a tour is more convenient.
- Park entry fees are paid in US dollars cash—have small bills ready before entering.
- Many wildlife encounters happen on night drives; try to schedule long drives during the day.
