Before the waterfalls and safaris: how to apply for an e-visa, carry US cash, and follow wildlife park rules.
Visa & Entry
Most foreign visitors need to apply for a visa in advance. It is recommended to apply online for an e-Visa (usually processed within 5–10 working days), or you can get a visa on arrival at major entry points such as Victoria Falls. Required documents include your passport, itinerary, and accommodation details. Travellers often visiting Zambia as well can check the availability of the UniVisa (joint visa for both countries), subject to the latest official announcements.
Best Time to Visit
- May–August (Dry Season): Cool and sunny, with sparse vegetation and animals gathering around water sources — the prime time for Hwange safaris.
- September–October: Hot season, offering excellent visibility for game viewing; waterfall flow is at its lowest and the Devil’s Pool is open.
- November–March (Rainy Season): Green season, with the highest and most spectacular waterfall flows, great for birdwatching, though animals are more dispersed.

Safari Etiquette & Taboos
- Stay in your vehicle at all times in parks, do not walk at night, and follow your guide’s instructions.
- Keep a safe distance of tens of metres from elephant and lion herds; do not feed animals, make loud noises, or use flash photography.
- When crossing into neighbouring countries such as Zambia, confirm visa and yellow fever certificate requirements in advance.
- Tipping guides and camp staff is customary — carry small bills of 5–10 USD.
