Starting in Cape Town, this itinerary connects the Cape Peninsula, wine regions, and the Garden Route—perfect for first-time visitors to South Africa who want to explore at a relaxed pace by self-drive.

Itinerary Overview

This route begins in Cape Town and links the Cape Peninsula, wine-producing areas, and the Garden Route. It’s ideal for first-time travelers to South Africa who are interested in natural scenery and self-driving. The total distance is around 900 kilometers, and it’s recommended to rent a car or join a small group tour. To see wildlife, you can add two nights in Kruger National Park or Addo Elephant National Park before or after the trip.

D1–D3 Cape Town: Table Mountain & the City

  • D1: Arrive in Cape Town, take the cable car up Table Mountain (weather permitting) → Dinner at Victoria & Alfred Waterfront.
  • D2: Visit Robben Island (Mandela’s prison cell and apartheid history) → Colorful Bo-Kaap neighborhood → Sunset at Signal Hill.
  • D3: Company’s Garden and South African Museum → Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden → Camps Bay beachfront.

D4 Cape Peninsula: Cape of Good Hope & Penguins

Drive south along Chapman’s Peak Drive, passing through Hout Bay and Boulders Beach (home to a penguin colony), then reach the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point Lighthouse, with spectacular coastal views along the way. Return to Cape Town in the evening or stay near Simon’s Town.

D5 Stellenbosch & Franschhoek: Wine Country

Head into the Cape Winelands, where Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are packed with wineries. Arrange wine tastings and lunch, and don’t miss the charming vineyard tram in the French-style town of Franschhoek. Stay at a winery or a guesthouse in town.

D6–D7 Garden Route: Mossel Bay & Knysna

  • D6: Travel via Mossel Bay to Knysna, visiting Knysna Lagoon and the famous Knysna Heads.
  • D7: Go to Plettenberg Bay to see seals and beaches, or head inland and fly out from George Airport.

Tips

  • Table Mountain Cableway often closes due to strong winds, so it’s wise to have a backup day.
  • Some sections of the Garden Route are toll roads, so carry cash or an electronic tag.
  • If you have extra time, consider adding a whale-watching stop in Hermanus (June–November).
