7-Day Venezuela Itinerary: Caracas – Los Roques – Canaima and Angel Falls (Prioritizing Feasibility)
A classic route centered on natural wonders: experience Caribbean island-hopping and tabletop mountain waterfalls in one trip, but always with safety and flight realities in mind.
Important Considerations
The following itinerary is a reference framework. Due to safety conditions and unstable flight schedules, travelers should confirm before departure that there are no active travel warnings from their foreign ministry, that international flights are operating normally, and arrange for a reliable local guide throughout. Independent travel is not recommended. The itinerary should remain flexible, with built-in buffer time to adjust the sequence in case of flight cancellations.
Itinerary Overview
Day 1: Caracas → Days 2–3: Los Roques Archipelago → Days 4–6: Canaima and Angel Falls → Day 7: Return to Caracas for departure.
Day 1: Caracas
Arrive at Simón Bolívar International Airport (CCS, located in coastal Maiquetía, with a significant altitude difference from the city center) → Transfer directly to your hotel via local guide; avoid nighttime transfers → Spend the evening in the hotel area, where you can view the silhouette of Avila Mountain, and rest early to adjust to the time difference.
Days 2–3: Los Roques Archipelago
Fly around 40 minutes by small plane to Gran Roque Island → Stay in a fishing-village-style guesthouse → Go sailing and island-hopping for snorkeling: Francisqui Reef is one of the Caribbean’s most spectacular coral gardens → Watch the sunset over the western Caribbean in the evening. Local souvenirs include whole lobsters (pay in US dollars). There are no banks or card payment facilities on the islands, so bring enough cash before leaving.
Days 4–6: Canaima and Angel Falls
- Day 4: Fly to Ciudad Bolívar or directly to Canaima → Stay at a campsite by the lagoon, with close views of the Ucaima and Sapó waterfall clusters, and fall asleep to the sound of the falls at night.
- Day 5: During the rainy season (June–November), take a small plane to fly around Angel Falls, or travel up the Carrao River by dugout canoe to admire the world’s highest waterfall, which plunges 979 meters, from a viewing platform.
- Day 6: Optional short hike toward Mount Roraima or relax at the campsite, then return in the evening. For avid hikers, the full Roraima loop requires an additional 6 days.
Day 7: Departure
Fly back to Caracas to connect with your international flight. Be sure to allow at least half a day as a buffer in case of delays on the domestic leg.
Tips
- Baggage weight limits on domestic small planes are strict (often 10 kg), so pack light. Any excess will be charged on-site per kilogram in cash.
- Angel Falls has low water levels or may even dry up during the dry season; the best time to view the falls is during the rainy season.
- All payments should be made in cash (small-denomination US dollars). No card payments are accepted at campsites or on the islands. The two segments of the itinerary can be designed as interchangeable modules; if one part is canceled, the rest can be shifted accordingly without rigid scheduling.
