Start your visit at Independence Square, then head to Palacio Salvo, explore the pedestrian streets of the old town, enjoy a barbecue lunch at the Port Market, and finish with a walk along the Rambla (waterfront promenade) to watch the sunset. Most of the city’s main attractions are located in the old town and are easily accessible on foot.
Visit the Solís Theatre, explore the Mercado del Puerto (agricultural market), stroll through Prado Park and the Rose Garden, and relax at Playa Pocitos while watching the sunset. The Mercado del Puerto features numerous local food stalls, making it a great spot for a filling lunch.
Take a bus ride of about 1.5 hours to Piriápolis, where you can enjoy the seaside, hilltop churches, and beautiful sunsets — perfect for a relaxing day out. During the summer months, swimming in the sea is also a great option.
If you have time, take an early bus to Colonia del Sacramento’s historic old town and return to Montevideo in the afternoon to catch your flight or ferry. Alternatively, spend the day exploring the old town’s charming cafes and museums.
Inter-city buses in Montevideo operate from the Tres Cruces terminal. Buses to Piriápolis take about 1.5 hours and to Colonia about 2.5 hours, with frequent services that allow for same-day return trips. For accommodation, the old town and Pocitos districts are especially convenient, with mid-range hotels typically costing around $70–$115 per night. If you’re visiting in winter, consider taking a day trip to the hot springs in Salto in the north, which is roughly a 6-hour bus ride from Montevideo. Uruguay’s inter-city transportation is generally reliable and comfortable, making it a good choice to base yourself in the capital and take multiple excursions.
If you have more time, you could extend your trip to 5–6 days to include a visit to the hot springs in Salto or go whale watching along the Rocha coast. In summer, it’s advisable to book your accommodation on the east coast in advance. In winter, focus on city-based activities and hot springs, and avoid the cooler coastal areas with strong winds.
