Starting from the capital, Dushanbe, travel south along the M41 Pamir Highway to Khorog and the Wakhan Valley, connecting highland lakes, snow-capped mountains, and Silk Road ancient cities.
Route Overview
D1–D2 Dushanbe → D3 Karakul Lake → D4 Murghab → D5–D6 Khorog and the Wakhan Valley → D7 Return or continue onward. The core section is the M41 Pamir Highway, which features high altitudes and variable road conditions. Be sure to allow plenty of time and confirm road status in advance.
D1–D2 Dushanbe
- D1: Arrive in Dushanbe and visit the Monument to Ismail Samani, the National Museum, and the Green Bazaar to adjust to the time difference and altitude.
- D2: Hike to Iskanderkul Lake or explore the Fan Mountains, enjoying the lake and mountain scenery of the Gissar-Alay Range.
D3 Karakul Lake
Travel east along the Pamir Highway, crossing a mountain pass to reach Karakul Lake at an altitude of about 3,900 metres. The lake’s deep blue waters contrast with the surrounding desert and snow-capped peaks. Daytime and nighttime temperatures vary greatly at high altitude, so bring warm clothing and be aware of the risk of altitude sickness. Accommodation by the lake is relatively basic.
D4 Murghab
Murghab is a small town on the Pamir Plateau, at an altitude of about 3,600 metres, serving as an important hub for supplies and lodging. The area features alpine pastures and yaks. The night sky is clear with excellent stargazing, but temperatures drop significantly at night, so dress warmly.
D5–D6 Khorog and the Wakhan Valley
- D5: Head south along the Panj River canyon to Khorog. Visit the local botanical garden and bazaar to experience life in a highland town.
- D6: Travel to the Wakhan Valley, where you can see villages and the ruins of ancient fortresses across the Panj River. This is one of the most spectacular sections of the Pamir region.
D7 Return or Continue Onward
Return to Dushanbe via the highway from Khorog, or cross overland into a neighbouring country. The return journey is long, so set aside the full day and confirm road and vehicle conditions in advance. Avoid travelling at night.
Tips
- Some sections of the Pamir Highway are only open in summer. Be sure to check road and weather conditions before departure.
- Medical facilities and supplies are scarce at high altitudes. Travel with others and choose an experienced driver or guide.
- Apply in advance for a special permit and carry it with you for any roadside checks.
