Itineraries 2026-10-03 0 views 7 days
Pack design cities and polar skies into one trip: start with Stockholm’s metro art and shipwrecks, then fly north to Lapland for aurora hunting and winter activities.

Itinerary Overview

Days 1–4: Stockholm and surroundings → Day 5: Fly to Kiruna, transfer to Abisko → Day 6: Abisko National Park and aurora → Day 7: Return to Stockholm for departure. The flight from Stockholm to Kiruna takes about 1 hour 40 minutes; in winter, you can also take an overnight train to experience the Polar Express.

Day 1: Stockholm Old Town (Gamla Stan)

After arrival, explore the cobblestone alleys, the Royal Palace, and Stockholm Cathedral in Gamla Stan. In the afternoon, visit the Church of St. Nicholas (Knight’s Island) and the Nobel Prize Museum. Watch the sunset from a fjord-side viewpoint in the evening. The Old Town is compact and walkable, with the best atmosphere when crowds thin in the late afternoon.

Day 2: Vasa Ship Museum & Djurgården Island

In the morning, visit the Vasa Ship Museum to see the 1628 warship, salvaged and remarkably well-preserved. Then head to Djurgården Island to explore the Nordic Museum and Skansen Open-Air Museum for insights into Swedish folklore and architecture. Skansen’s small zoo is a hit with families.

Day 3: Metro Art & City Hall

Stockholm’s metro is called the world’s longest art gallery—don’t miss the platform murals and cave-like designs at T-Centralen, Kungsträdgården, and Solna Centrum. In the afternoon, tour City Hall and climb the tower for island views. End the day at Monteliusvägen in Södermalm for panoramic city photos.

Day 4: Archipelago or Drottningholm Palace Day Trip

Take a ferry to Vaxholm or Sandhamn in the Stockholm Archipelago to see wooden houses and coastal scenery, or visit Drottningholm Palace to explore the Chinese Pavilion and the Court Theatre (both UNESCO World Heritage Sites). Return to the city in the evening for shopping and rest before heading north.

Day 5: Fly North to Kiruna, Then to Abisko

Fly to Kiruna in the morning and visit the wooden church and ICEHOTEL (in Jukkasjärvi). In the afternoon, travel by bus to Abisko. Arrive in the evening and consider staying near Aurora Sky Station—dress warmly and watch the night sky from sunset onward.

Day 6: Abisko National Park & Aurora

Spend the day hiking in Abisko National Park, walking the King’s Trail to the canyon viewpoint. Optional activities include snowshoeing, dog sledding, or ice fishing. At night, wait for the aurora at Aurora Sky Station—the best chances come during clear, moonless nights away from light pollution.

Day 7: Return to Stockholm for Departure

Travel back from Abisko to Kiruna in the morning, then fly to Stockholm for your international flight. If your flight is late, pick up design goods or food souvenirs near the airport.

Tips

  • Winter temperatures in the north can drop to –30°C. Layer up with windproof, insulated clothing and snow boots. Hand warmers and gloves are essential.
  • Aurora viewing depends on weather and solar activity. Reserve at least two nights and choose itineraries with flexible rescheduling.
  • Stockholm metro rides are counted per entry—use an SL transport card or app for the easiest tickets.
