4-Day Paraguay Itinerary: Asunción and Jesuit Missions
Itineraries 2026-10-03 0 views 4 Days
When time is limited, base yourself in Asunción and string together a relaxed short trip covering the city, the lake district, and the southern UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Idea

With 4 days based in Asunción, spend one day exploring the city, one day visiting the lake area, and two days heading south to Encarnación to see the Jesuit ruins. This relaxed pace suits first-time visitors to Paraguay.

Day 1: Old Town Asunción

Riverfront Promenade → López Palace → Heroes Pantheon → Paraguayan Cathedral → Independence House Museum → Dinner at Mercado 4. The main sights in the old town are close together and can be covered on foot. Don’t miss the sunset by the river in the evening.

Day 2: Areguá and Lake Ypacaraí

In the morning, visit Areguá to see ñandutí lace and pottery workshops. In the afternoon, take a stroll along the shores of Lake Ypacaraí and Lake Saint Bernardino before returning to the city. This is the most classic day trip from Asunción.

Day 3: Head South to Encarnación

An early bus takes about 5 hours to reach Encarnación. In the afternoon, walk along the Paraná River promenade, browse the craft market, and try some fresh river fish and grilled meat in the evening. The river beaches here are lively in summer and popular with locals on holiday.

Day 4: Jesuit Mission Ruins

Hire a car to visit the ruins of Trinidad and Jesús (about 30 km from the city), where you can see the stone walls, churches, and sculptures and learn about the history of the Jesuits and the Guaraní people. Return in the afternoon, or cross the border into Argentina via Posadas to continue your journey.

Tips

  • The ruins have limited opening hours, so it’s best to go in the morning to avoid the midday heat.
  • There is little shade at the ruins, so bring water, a hat, and sun protection.
  • In summer, Encarnación’s river beaches get crowded—be mindful of water safety.

Transportation and Accommodation

Asunción is Paraguay’s transport hub. Most hotels in the city are located in the old town and along the riverfront. Mid-range hotels cost around $42–$70 per night. Long-distance buses to Encarnación depart from Asunción’s main terminal and take 5–6 hours. It’s recommended to take an early bus and bring water and snacks. Accommodation in Encarnación mainly consists of small riverside guesthouses, and you should book months in advance during Carnival. If you plan to cross into Argentina or Brazil, check visa requirements and border crossing opening hours in advance, and allow time for possible queues at the ports.
