Itineraries 2026-10-03 1 views 7 days
A classic northbound loop through Oman: mosques and souks of the capital, the Fortress Route, stargazing in a desert camp, and a nighttime visit to turtle nesting sites. This road trip captures the full Gulf experience.

Itinerary Overview

D1-D2 Muscat → D3 Nizwa Fortress Route → D4-D5 Wahiba Desert → D6 Sur & Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve → D7 Return to Muscat for departure. Total distance: approx. 900 km. Recommended to rent a 4WD SUV; winter road conditions are good.

D1-D2 Muscat: Gateway to the Modern Sultanate

  • D1: Arrive at Muscat International Airport → Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque (open to non-Muslims in the morning; dress modestly) → Evening at Mutrah Corniche Souk to watch fishing boats return and browse frankincense stalls.
  • D2: Exterior view of Al Alam Palace in Old Muscat → Mirani and Jalali Forts → Royal Opera House → Evening stroll and dinner at Qurm Beach.

D3 Nizwa and the Fortress Route

Drive west along Highway 15 for about 2 hours to Nizwa. In the morning, climb the giant round tower of Nizwa Fort for views over the oasis and the old mud-brick village of Hamra. In the afternoon, explore Nizwa Souk, Oman’s hub for silverware and pottery. If time allows, visit nearby Bahla Fort or Jabrin Castle, both featuring exquisite mud-brick carvings. Overnight in Nizwa or head directly into the mountains.

D4-D5 Wahiba Desert: Camel Caravans and Starry Skies

  • D4: Enter Wahiba Desert via Suwayq. Deflate tires and switch to 4WD mode near the desert edge, then transfer by camp vehicle into the dunes. Ride camels in the evening to climb a sand ridge for sunset. Overnight in a Bedouin-style camp under the stars; the campfire dinner and night sky are the highlights of the trip.
  • D5: Watch the morning light play on the dunes; optional dune bashing and sandboarding. Visit a Bedouin family in the morning for camel milk coffee. Afternoon trip to Wadi Bani Khalid oasis town for a swim in the clear pools. Overnight in an oasis guesthouse.

D6 Sur and Turtle Bay

Travel east along the coast to Sur, a historic boat-building city. Visit traditional dhow workshops and the Sur Maritime Museum. In the evening, arrive at Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve. Join a guided night walk to see green turtles laying eggs on the beach (limited spots; book in advance). Overnight at the reserve lodge or in Sur.

D7 Departure

Return to Muscat via Wadi Shab rock valley or directly via the highway, about a 4–5 hour drive. Depending on your flight time, you can revisit Mutrah Souk in the old town, shop for frankincense and Khanjar dagger souvenirs, and then depart.

Tips

  • 4WD vehicles and traveling in a group are essential for desert sections; avoid going alone.
  • No flash photography or loud noise during turtle night walks; follow guide instructions.
  • The Grand Mosque is open in the morning and closed to non-Muslims on Fridays.
