Connecting the capital, a mountain railway, world heritage fjords, and a Hanseatic old town makes this the most reliable first-time Norway route.
Itinerary Overview
D1–D2: Oslo → D3: Mountain Railway & Flåm → D4: Sognefjord → D5–D6: Bergen → D7: Return. The core section can be covered using the 'Norway in a Nutshell' package, with seamless connections by train, mountain railway, and fjord cruise.
D1–D2: Oslo
- D1: Arrive at Oslo Gardermoen Airport → Take the airport express train into the city → Visit the Oslo Opera House (walk on the roof) → Stroll along Karl Johans Gate → Dinner in the Aker Brygge waterfront area.
- D2: Visit the Vigeland Sculpture Park → Munch Museum → Holmenkollen Ski Jump and Ski Museum → Folk Museum on the Bygdøy Peninsula.
D3: Mountain Railway & Flåm
Take an early morning train from Oslo on the Bergen Railway (Bergensbanen) to Myrdal, traveling through highlands and snowlines—this is one of the most spectacular mountain railways in Northern Europe. Change to the Flåm Railway (Flåmsbana) in Myrdal; over 20 km with a nearly 900-meter descent, including a stop at Kjosfossen waterfall. Overnight in Flåm or Aurland.
D4: Sognefjord
In the morning, take a fjord cruise through the Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord (both UNESCO World Heritage Sites), with snow-capped peaks and waterfalls lining the shores. In the afternoon, visit the Stegastein Viewpoint for panoramic fjord views or go cycling in the Laerdal Valley. Return to Flåm in the evening.
D5–D6: Bergen
- D5: Travel to Bergen by train or bus → Explore the colorful wooden houses at Bryggen Wharf (UNESCO World Heritage Site) → Visit the Fish Market → Take the Fløibanen Funicular for city views from Mount Fløyen.
- D6: Visit the Edvard Grieg Museum at Troldhaugen → Go on a fjord cruise or hiking trip → Dine in the Bryggen area in the evening.
D7: Return
Depart from Bergen Airport or take the Bergen Railway back to Oslo. If you have extra time, consider adding a day trip to Hardangerfjord or a Sognefjord branch route.
Tips

- Accommodation in Flåm is limited, so book 2–3 months in advance if possible.
- Mountain weather is unpredictable—pack a waterproof jacket and warm layers.
