Classic 7-day Mexico itinerary: Mexico City — Mérida — Chichén Itzá — Tulum — Cancún
Weave together civilization and beaches: start with highland ancient cities and pyramids, then head south to the Caribbean coast for a well-paced trip.
Itinerary Overview
Days 1–3: Mexico City and surroundings → Day 4: Fly to Mérida → Day 5: Chichén Itzá → Day 6: Tulum + Cancún → Day 7: Depart from Cancún. It’s recommended to fly directly from Mexico City to Mérida (about 2 hours) rather than taking a long bus ride.
Days 1–3: Mexico City – The Highland Ancient Capital
- Day 1: Arrive in Mexico City → Visit the Zócalo, the Cathedral, the murals by Diego Rivera in the National Palace → Enjoy the evening nightlife along Paseo de la Reforma.
- Day 2: Early morning trip to Teotihuacán to climb the Pyramid of the Sun, Pyramid of the Moon, and walk along the Avenue of the Dead → On the way back, stop by the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
- Day 3: Morning at the National Museum of Anthropology (allow 3–4 hours) → Afternoon visit to the Frida Kahlo Museum (Museo Frida Kahlo) in Coyoacán (book tickets online in advance) and the Blue House (Casa Azul) → Evening dinner in the Roma neighborhood.
Day 4: Mérida – The White City
Arrive by morning flight in Mérida, the capital of the Yucatán Peninsula. Stroll through the colonial old town, the cathedral, and the Monday market at Plaza de Santiago (Socabó). In the evening, enjoy street music in Calle 61 and try the Yucatán specialty, cochinita pibil (slow-roasted pork in banana leaves).
Day 5: Chichén Itzá + Ik Kil Cenote
Join a day tour or hire a private car: arrive early to enter Chichén Itzá and see the El Castillo pyramid, the ball court, and the Temple of the Skulls, avoiding the midday heat. In the afternoon, swim in the Ik Kil cenote (Cenote Ik Kil) to cool off. Stay overnight in Valladolid or return to Mérida.
Day 6: Tulum + Cancún
Head to the Caribbean coast to visit the cliffside Tulum Mayan ruins (about 2 hours), and swim on the white-sand beach below. Arrive at the hotel zone of Cancún in the evening to watch the Caribbean sunset.
Day 7: Depart from Cancún
Spend the morning snorkeling at Isla Mujeres or relaxing on the hotel beach. Head to Cancún International Airport in the afternoon for departure. If transiting through the United States, allow plenty of time for connections.
Tips
- Chichén Itzá and Tulum can be very crowded during peak season, so aim to arrive right when they open.
- Mexico City sits at an altitude of 2,240 meters, so take it easy on your first day.
- Domestic flights (operated by Volaris and Viva Aerobus) are cheaper if booked 1–2 months in advance.
- ADO buses between Mérida and Cancún run frequently, with a journey time of about 4 hours, making them a good option for travelers who aren’t in a rush.
- Chichén Itzá is free for Mexican citizens on Sundays, which draws large crowds of local visitors—try to avoid visiting on this day.
