This short trip focuses on Lake Malawi and Liwonde National Park, minimizing travel between cities and ideal for travelers flying in and out of Lilongwe with limited time. The total distance is around 500 km. Renting or hiring a car is recommended, allowing you to spend more time on lake activities and wildlife viewing rather than long road journeys.
Depart Lilongwe in the morning and drive about 3 hours to reach the lakeside areas of Kaporo or Salima. Along the way, you’ll pass villages, cornfields, and roadside mango stalls. In the afternoon, enjoy snorkeling, kayaking, or relaxing on the beach. Watch the sunset over the lake in the evening and have dinner featuring freshly grilled chambo fish by the water.
Take an early morning boat trip to a popular fish-viewing spot to observe colorful cichlid fish and experience the ecological richness of Lake Malawi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the morning, visit a local fishing village to learn about traditional fishing methods and canoe-making. After lunch, try sailing or canoeing. Watch the sunset from your lodge terrace in the evening, and enjoy grilled chambo fish with nsima for dinner.
Head to Liwonde in the morning. In the afternoon, take a boat cruise along the Shire River and go on a 4x4 safari to spot hippos, elephants, crocodiles, and various antelope species. The dry season is the best time for wildlife viewing as animals gather near the river. Stay overnight at a lodge outside the park, enjoying the sounds of the jungle and stargazing at night.
Enjoy one more early morning safari or walking tour in the morning—spotting elephant herds and buffalo is possible with luck. Return to Lilongwe in the afternoon, stopping en route at a handicraft market to shop for wood carvings, fabrics, and coffee. Fly out in the evening, concluding your compact yet fulfilling lake and wildlife adventure.
