Explore the best of Malawi’s lakeside scenery and wildlife over a week, traveling from the capital Lilongwe to Lake Malawi, then Liwonde National Park and the southern highlands.
Itinerary Overview
D1-D2 Lilongwe → D3-D4 Lake Malawi (Cape Maclear or Nkhata Bay) → D5 Liwonde National Park → D6-D7 Blantyre and the Southern Highlands. Transportation is mainly by private car or self-drive rental, though domestic flights can be used between the lake region and the south to save time.
D1-D2 Lilongwe: Capital & Local Markets
- D1: Arrive at Kamuzu International Airport → Check into accommodation in the city → Explore Old Town Lilongwe and the Central Market to experience local life.
- D2: Visit the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre → Shop at local markets and craft centres → Dinner at a lakeside restaurant in the evening.
D3-D4 Lake Malawi: Azure Waters & Cichlids
- D3: Drive to Cape Maclear, check into a lakeside lodge, and spend the afternoon snorkeling or taking a boat trip to see fish.
- D4: Go kayaking, canoeing, or enjoy a sunset sailing trip on Lake Malawi National Park; try grilled chambo fish by the beach in the evening.
D5 Liwonde National Park: Shire River Safari
Liwonde revolves around the Shire River, where you can get close to hippos, elephants, and buffalo by boat. During the dry season, animals gather near the river, making it one of Malawi’s most rewarding wildlife experiences. Walking safaris and 4x4 game drives are also available.
D6-D7 Blantyre & the South
On D6, head to Blantyre to explore colonial-era architecture and local markets. On D7, visit Mulanje Mountain or the Thyolo tea plantations for highland hiking and tea estate experiences, then depart via Blantyre or return to Lilongwe.
Tips
- The lake region and the south are quite far apart; allow at least half a day for driving or consider taking a domestic flight.
- National park entry fees and safari activities should be booked in advance, especially as lodges can fill up quickly in peak season.
- Carry enough cash, as card payments are limited in the lake area and parks.
