Itineraries 2026-10-03 0 views 4 days
See Hungary’s highlights even with limited time: explore Budapest by districts, then spend a day in a historic town along the Danube Bend—relaxed pace, minimal backtracking, perfect for a short weekend getaway.

Idea

Budapest is divided by the Danube River into Buda and Pest, with major attractions clustered in specific areas. This itinerary divides the city into three parts: Pest, Buda, and thermal baths & markets, then adds a day trip to the Danube Bend. In just 4 days, you can enjoy both the city and its nearby gems.

Day 1 – Pest Side: From Heroes’ Square to Parliament

Start your morning at Heroes’ Square and City Park, with a quick exterior look at the Széchenyi Thermal Bath. Walk or take metro M1 along Andrássy Avenue to the Hungarian State Opera House and the House of Terror. Spend the afternoon visiting the Hungarian Parliament Building (advance booking required). Watch the sunset from the top of St. Stephen’s Basilica in the evening, then explore the ruin bars in the Jewish Quarter.

Day 2 – Buda Side: Castle Hill and Gellért Hill

Cross the Széchenyi Chain Bridge on foot to reach Castle Hill. Tour Buda Castle, Matthias Church, and Fisherman’s Bastion, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the Danube and Pest. Spend the afternoon soaking in the Gellért Thermal Bath or hike up Gellért Hill for a city sunset. End the day with a Danube River cruise to see the Parliament Building illuminated at night.

Day 3 – Thermal Baths & Markets

Experience a typical Hungarian wellness routine at the Széchenyi Thermal Bath in the morning. In the afternoon, visit the Great Market Hall to shop for paprika, Tokaji wine, and souvenirs. Later, stroll along Váci Street for some shopping, or enjoy a traditional afternoon tea at the New York Café to soak in the century-old café’s atmosphere.

Day 4 – Danube Bend Day Trip

Take a suburban train to Szentendre to wander its colorful houses and art shops, and visit an Orthodox church. In the afternoon, head to Visegrád for a hilltop view of the Danube Bend, or go to Esztergom to see Hungary’s largest church and glimpse Slovakia across the river. Return to Budapest in the evening, and allow plenty of time if you have an outbound flight that night.

Tips

  • Budapest’s metro and trams cover most attractions; a 24-hour or 72-hour travel pass offers the best value.
  • Advance booking is often required for the Parliament Building and Széchenyi Thermal Bath during peak season. Bring your own swimsuit and towel.
  • Danube River cruises run frequently; the one after sunset offers the best views of the illuminated buildings.
