Hungary is a member of the Schengen Area. Most foreign visitors need to apply for a short-stay Schengen visa (Category C) in advance, typically through the Hungarian embassy or consulate in their own country or a visa application center authorized by them. Applications can also be submitted to the main destination country if Hungary is the primary stay during your trip. Required documents usually include your passport, application form, photo, round-trip flight and hotel bookings, travel medical insurance (with a minimum coverage of €30,000), proof of employment and financial means, etc. The validity and permitted duration of stay are determined by the visa sticker—typically, a single entry allows up to 90 days. It’s recommended to apply at least one month in advance, and even earlier during peak seasons.
Upon entry, you may be asked to show proof of accommodation, a return flight ticket, and proof of funds. It’s advisable to carry paper copies of these documents. Internal land travel between Hungary and neighboring Schengen countries such as Austria, Slovakia, and Slovenia usually does not involve further checks, but you should still carry your passport when transiting.
