Itinerary: Day 1 Arrive in Tegucigalpa → Day 2 Travel to Copán → Day 3 Explore Copán Ruins → Day 4 Visit Lake Yojoa → Day 5 Discover La Ceiba and the Garifuna Coast → Days 6–7 Enjoy Roatán Island. The drive from the capital to Copán takes about 5–6 hours, or you can take a domestic flight; inland travel to the Caribbean coast is mainly by bus or private transfer, followed by ferry or small plane to the islands.
After arriving at Toncontín International Airport (TGU), head into the city to visit Central Square, the National Palace, and the Catedral de San Miguel. In the evening, go to El Picacho viewpoint for panoramic views of the city. The capital sits at an altitude of about 1,000 metres with a mild climate—be mindful of the temperature difference between morning and evening.
In the morning, visit the Cathedral of Our Lady of La Paz or the Virgin of Suyapa statue, then drive to western Copán (Copán Ruinas). The route passes through coffee and tobacco-growing areas, with optional stops at Lenca villages. Arrive in the town of Copán in the evening, stroll along its cobblestone streets, and try local coffee.
Spend the day exploring the Copán Archaeological Park: the Main Plaza, the ball court, the Rosalila Temple tunnel, and the world-famous Hieroglyphic Stairway—the longest known text in the Maya world. In the afternoon, visit the nearby Las Sepulturas noble residential area and the Bird Park. It’s recommended to hire a certified guide.
Return to the main road from Copán and head to Lake Yojoa, the country’s largest natural lake. Enjoy birdwatching, boating, and visits to nearby Pulhapanzak Waterfall and coffee plantations. Spend the night in a lakeside town.
Travel north to the Caribbean port of La Ceiba. Visit nearby Garifuna villages (such as Sambo Creek and Corozal) to experience drumming, dancing, and coconut-based cuisine. Watch the sunset by the seaside in the evening. La Ceiba is also the departure point for ferries to the Bay Islands.
Take a ferry or small plane to Roatán Island, part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. West Bay’s white-sand beaches are great for snorkelling, while West End is the hub for diving and dining. You can book two or more dives to explore coral walls, turtles, and shipwrecks, or visit Iguana Farm and Garifuna villages. On Day 7, take a flight or ferry back to the mainland in the afternoon, departing via San Pedro Sula or the capital.
