Spend the morning walking around the lakeside docks or taking a boat ride to admire the lake. Lake Tanganyika is the second-deepest lake in the world, with vast waters and deep blue hues. In the afternoon, visit local markets and craft workshops to learn about lakeside fishing and daily life.
Drive to Gitega (the political capital), visit the National Museum, and then head to the Gishora Royal Drum Site. The ceremonial drum performances of the royal drum corps have been inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list. The powerful rhythms are one of Burundi’s most iconic cultural symbols.
Head to Ruvubu National Park, Burundi’s largest protected area, where grasslands and river valleys intertwine and are home to hippos, buffaloes, crocodiles, and various antelope species. Activities focus on safari and birdwatching—always follow your guide’s instructions.
Travel to Kibira National Park, which preserves highland rainforest along the Congo-Nile watershed and is habitat to chimpanzees and various monkey species. It’s also great for birdwatching and jungle trekking. Roads can be slippery in the rainy season, so wear anti-slip shoes and bring rain gear.
Visit the southern Rutovu area, home to the southernmost marker of the Nile’s source, and learn about the geography of the Kagera River and the Nile system. Enjoy scenic views of the southern highlands and tea plantations along the way.
Return to Bujumbura via Gitega or directly, depending on your flight schedule. If time allows, pick up coffee and tea as souvenirs in Bujumbura.
