Travel Guide to Transportation in Armenia: Getting to and from Airports, City Taxis, and Outskirts Car Hire
Zvartnots International Airport is close to downtown Yerevan, city taxis are affordable, and reaching monasteries in the outskirts is best done by private car hire or intercity minibus. This guide covers all your transport options in Armenia.
Arrival and Getting into Town
Zvartnots International Airport (EVN) is located about 12 km west of Yerevan and is Armenia’s main air gateway. Most international travellers arrive via connecting flights in Dubai, Doha, Istanbul, or Moscow.
| Option | Time | Estimated Cost |
|---|
| Ride-hailing apps (Yandex/GG) | Approximately 20–30 minutes | Around the equivalent of $2–$4 |
| Airport taxi | Approximately 20–30 minutes | Slightly more expensive; using an app is recommended |
| Airport bus route 201 | Approximately 40 minutes | Economical; goes to Republic Square |
Getting Around the City
- Metro and buses: Yerevan has only one metro line, with low fares. Station announcements are in Armenian. Buses and minibuses cover the city and are good for experiencing local life, though navigating them can be tricky.
- Ride-hailing apps: Yandex and GG are the most popular local options. Fares start at just a few dollars, and they work seamlessly across borders—highly recommended.
- Walking: Downtown attractions are close together. It takes around 20 minutes to walk from Republic Square to Cascade Plaza.
Outskirts and Inter-city Travel
- Private day tours: Attractions like Geghard, Garni, Etchmiadzin, and Khor Virap are not easily accessible by public transport. A private car for the day costs around $70–$115 and can be shared to reduce cost. This is the most flexible option.
- Intercity minibuses (Marshrutka): Depart from Kilikia and Northern Bus Stations to places like Sevan, Dilijan, and Tatev. They’re cheap but have limited schedules and basic comfort.
- Train: The overnight train from Yerevan to Tbilisi, Georgia, is a classic cross-border journey. Domestic rail services aren’t very useful for tourists.
- Self-driving: Roads include many mountain passes and vary in condition. Snow chains are needed in winter highlands. Renting is best left to those with mountain driving experience.
Tips
- The Wings of Tatev cable car may be suspended in winter due to high winds. Check its operating status before you go.
- Remote areas have few gas stations and restrooms. Bring snacks and cash if traveling by private car.
- Google Maps is usable for planning, but always rely on local ride-hailing apps for booking rides.
