Carlisle Castle

Carlisle Castle is located in the city of Carlisle, Cumbria, England, near the renowned UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall. For over 900 years, it has witnessed many significant events in British history. Due to Carlisle’s proximity to the border between England and Scotland, it has long been a center of many wars and invasions. Today, the castle is owned by English Heritage and is open to the public. Until recently, it served as the headquarters of the King’s Own Royal Border Regiment, now the administrative headquarters of the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment on a county level, and houses a regimental museum within its walls.

Carlisle Castle is one of the earliest stone-built castles. It was constructed by William II after he took Carlisle from the Scots, and was built to defend against Scottish invasions. The imposing, rust-red Carlisle Castle was primarily built for military purposes, hence its notably sturdy structure and lack of ornate royal decoration, allowing it to be completed in just one year. In 1568, Mary, Queen of Scots, was briefly imprisoned at Carlisle Castle after losing her throne.
