Lake District Aquarium

The Lake District Aquarium is situated in a lakeside village on the southern shore of Windermere in Cumbria, England, and is the third most popular tourist attraction in the county. Opened in 1997, it originally centered around the aquatic environments of the English Lake District. In 2008, it underwent a rebranding, and its theme was broadened to include global freshwater ecosystems. It is operated by the Spanish leisure company Parques Reunidos, which manages 67 parks worldwide.

The Lake District Aquarium features exhibits of both freshwater and marine aquatic life, primarily divided into five major zones: Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas, and the Lake District. The European zone includes species such as brown trout, rainbow trout, koi, mirror carp, harvest mice, and Eurasian otters. The Asian zone showcases representative animals like the Asian small-clawed otter and Eurasian otter. The African zone features the African lungfish, African rainbow crab, Atlantic mudskipper, freshwater butterflyfish, spotted green goby, grey mullet, cichlids, leopard tortoise, African pike cichlid, small killifish, black phantom tetra, tilapia, upside-down catfish, eel, and tortoises. The Americas zone includes fish such as angelfish, naked tetra, Mexican tetra, catfish, plecos, gar, flowerhorn cichlid, pearl stingray, piranha, red-bellied pacu, redtail catfish, silver dollar, and South American lungfish. The Lake District section displays species like Arctic char, ballan wrasse, three-spined stickleback, flounder, brook trout, whitefish, cod, European perch, saithe, sea anemones, carp, tufted duck, pipefish, starfish, rudd, common shore crab, plaice, European lobster, ide, and tufted duck.
