Known as "the most beautiful scenery in the English Midlands," the Lake Windermere area is one of the filming locations for *Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban*. The lake over which Harry flies on a hippogriff was filmed at Lake Windermere.

Lake Windermere is the largest natural lake in England, situated in the Lake District of Cumbria, and is one of the most popular holiday destinations in England. The lake is 18.08 km long, 1.49 km wide, with an area of 14.73 km² and a depth of 66.76 m. It lies between two basins, with the eastern basin forming a series of islands opposite the town of Bowness on the eastern shore. Part of the Lake District National Park, the lake offers boating activities in summer and is a renowned tourist hub.

Lake Windermere was formed at the end of the last Ice Age, situated in a north–south glacial valley that cuts through the Pennines. The lake is long and narrow, with its deepest point at the northern end. In addition to being fed by rainfall and snowmelt from the surrounding highlands, Lake Windermere also receives water from nearby lakes such as Grasmere, and its outflow is through the River Leven. Around 40,000 people live in the Lake District, but it attracts up to 1.4 million visitors each year.
