The Three Castles of Bellinzona, Defensive Wall and Town Walls

Bellinzona is the capital of Switzerland’s Ticino Canton and a strategic transport hub connecting Italy and the Alps. It lies close to the junction of the Gotthard and San Bernardino Passes, giving it significant strategic importance since Roman times.

The Bellinzona site is made up of a group of fortresses surrounding Castel Grande, which sits atop a rocky crag overlooking the entire Ticino Valley. The three castles towering above the valley—the Castel Grande, Castello di Montebello, and Castello di Sasso Corbaro—along with their surrounding walls, are the only surviving example of medieval fortress architecture in the Alps. It is said that Castel Grande was first built in the 13th century, but written records indicate that its predecessors existed as early as the 6th century, while excavated artifacts suggest its origins may date back to around the 4th century.

Today, each of the ancient castles houses its own archaeology, history, and art museums. On the cobblestone streets of the old town, where remnants of ancient stone stairways remain, a market is held every Saturday, said to recreate a scene from the Middle Ages.
