Castello Visconteo is an ancient castle dating back to the 13th century, situated on the edge of the Old Town, with about one-fifth of it still retaining its original historic form. Locarno’s most famous attraction is the Sanctuary of Madonna del Sasso, a pilgrimage church said to have been built where the Virgin Mary appeared. It offers spectacular views of the city and the surrounding beautiful mountains, lakes, and valleys. Thanks to its location by Lake Maggiore, visitors simply can’t miss this elegant destination — swim in the lake, enjoy water sports, or take short trips around it, such as visiting the Brissago Islands.

Locarno hosts numerous festivals and events, the most notable being the Locarno Film Festival, which is highly praised by both cinema enthusiasts and the general public. Thousands of film fans gather here, and for eleven days, Locarno becomes the capital of the global film industry. The Piazza Grande screens open-air movies at night.
