Palacio de San Telmo

Palacio de San Telmo is a historic building located in Seville, in the southern part of Spain. Its construction began in 1682, initially intended to serve as the seminary of the navigation university, aiming to house and educate the orphans of sailors. Today, this long-standing structure serves as the seat of the Government of the Autonomous Community of Andalusia.

Palacio de San Telmo is the finest example of Baroque architecture in Seville. It has an overall rectangular layout, consisting of a central courtyard, four towers, a chapel, and gardens. In 1989, the office of the President of the Government of the Autonomous Community of Andalusia was established here. The most distinctive feature of the Palacio de San Telmo is its grand gateway, completed in 1734 and adorned with finely carved limestone columns. The sculptures on the two upper platforms represent Art and Science, and atop the gateway stands the statue of Saint Telmo. The façade of the palace is decorated with 12 statues, each representing one of the most renowned and influential figures in Seville’s history who made significant contributions to the city’s development, including painters and military leaders. These sculptures were created in 1895.
