Genoa Aquarium

The Genoa Aquarium is the largest aquarium in Italy and the second largest in Europe. It was built for the 1992 World Expo and resembles a large ship ready to set sail. The architecture of the Genoa Aquarium was designed in collaboration between Renzo Piano and a Cambridge-based design team led by Sergei Tchoban. The Genoa Aquarium is an educational, scientific, and cultural center whose mission is to raise public awareness about conservation, management, and the responsible use of aquatic environments through education.

Covering an area of 10,000 square meters, the Genoa Aquarium houses 63 tanks containing a total of 4 million liters of water, home to more than 600 species of marine animals and plants. Among the many sea creatures, larger ones include sharks, seals, and penguins. Other species on display include lionfish, flounders, bottlenose dolphins, red-bellied piranhas, longnose pipefish, green tree pythons, Napoleon wrasse, lionfish, butterflyfish, pearl jellyfish, and sea anemones, attracting approximately 1.2 million visitors each year.

Many of the aquarium’s tanks aim to recreate real-world marine environments, authentically representing regions such as Antarctica, the Mediterranean, the Red Sea, the Amazon River, and the Indian Ocean. One of the most distinctive tanks features a vibrant and eye-catching Caribbean coral reef.
