Palazzo Rosso

Palazzo Rosso is an ancient palace in Genoa, a port city in northern Italy, located on Via Garibaldi. Along with the nearby Palazzo Bianco (White Palace) and Palazzo Doria Tursi, it is one of Genoa’s most important art museums.

The palace was designed by architect Pietro Antonio Corradi and built between 1671 and 1677. Its exterior features a grand overall style, with most of the outer walls in a distinctive brick-red hue, while the interior is richly decorated, still hinting at its former glory. The Brignole Sale family owned the palace until 1874, when Duchess Maria Brignole Sale Galliera bequeathed it to the city of Genoa to enhance its artistic splendor and public resources. The building subsequently became municipal property and was transformed into a public art museum.

The initial core of the collection consisted of portraits donated by Duchess Galliera, including works by artists such as Anthony van Dyck, Guido Reni, Paolo Veronese, Guercino, Gregorio De Ferrari, Albrecht Dürer, Bernardo Strozzi, and Mattia Preti. Over time, as Palazzo Rosso expanded and its collection grew, it has become one of Genoa’s most prominent art museums.
