Piazza De Ferrari

Piazza De Ferrari is the main square of Genoa, Italy, located in the city center, between the old town and the new town, and is renowned for the fountain at its center. The square is named after the nearby prestigious Palazzo Ducale di Galliera, also known as Palazzo Raffaele De Ferrari.

In the late 19th century, Genoa and Milan were both major financial centers of Italy. The Stock Exchange was established in Piazza De Ferrari, along with many institutions such as the Banca Italiana di Credito. The office of Banca d’Italia was founded here in 1893. Today, the area around the square is home to numerous office buildings, banks, insurance companies, and headquarters of other private firms, making it the financial and commercial hub of Genoa.

The area surrounding Piazza De Ferrari features many historic palaces and buildings, including the Palazzo Ducale, the regional headquarters of Liguria – formerly the Palazzo della Marina (Italian Maritime Palace), established in 1741; the Accademia Ligustica di Belle Arti; the Teatro Carlo Felice; and the Stock Exchange Building, a neoclassical structure designed by architect Alfredo Coppedè and built in 1912. The massive fountain at the center of the square is especially beloved, serving as an iconic photo spot for many visitors. Especially enchanting under the glow of night lights, the fountain appears even more captivating when viewed from a distance.
