Teatro Carlo Felice

Teatro Carlo Felice is an opera house in the Italian city of Genoa, located next to Piazza De Ferrari. It hosts performances of opera, ballet, orchestral music, and concerts. The theater is named after Duke Carlo Felice of Savoy and was established on December 24, 1824. On January 31, 1825, local architect Carlo Barabino submitted the design for the opera house, and construction began on March 19, 1826.

On April 7, 1828, Vincenzo Bellini’s “Bianca e Fernando” was performed here for the first time, even though the building and interior decoration were not fully completed. The theater can accommodate about 2,500 spectators and its acoustics were considered among the best of the time. In 1892, Genoa commemorated the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s discovery of the Americas by spending 420,000 lire to renovate Teatro Carlo Felice.

Unfortunately, between 1941 and 1944, the exquisitely decorated Teatro Carlo Felice suffered devastating damage. Its luxurious 19th-century Rococo-style ceiling, along with all the scenery and wooden fittings, were completely destroyed. After the war, plans to rebuild the theater were immediately initiated. A design was finally approved in 1977 but was halted due to the death of the architect. Finally, Aldo Rossi provided the current design, which fully restored the façade but gave the interior a completely modern look. The theater reopened in June 1991.
