Lantern Tower

The Lantern Tower is the main lighthouse of the port of Genoa, Italy. Its significance extends beyond nighttime navigation, as it is also a symbol of Genoa and one of the oldest structures of its kind in the world. It is built on the hill of San Benigno, a short distance from the Sampierdarena district. The tower stands 76 meters tall and is situated at an elevation of 117 meters. Its unique features—Christian symbols such as a fish and a cross visible from afar—set it apart from other lighthouses.

The name "Lantern Tower" comes primarily from its structure, which consists of two stacked sections with a railing along the edges and the illumination light positioned at the top, making the tall tower resemble a burning candle when viewed from a distance. The Lantern Tower was originally built in 1128 (some sources say 1161), though the current structure dates to 1543. Before the nearby coastline was filled in, the site of the tower was a peninsula that marked the western end of the old port of Genoa. Adjacent to the tower is a museum opened in 2006, which showcases the history of the city and the port, especially the history of maritime navigation equipment, and includes a wealth of archival material.
