Genoa is located in the province of Genoa, in the Liguria region, and is one of Italy’s most important port cities, boasting a long history. As Italy’s largest port city and the second-largest port in the Mediterranean—after Marseille, France—it was designated as one of the European Capitals of Culture in 2004.
