Château de Tonquedec

Château de Tonquedec is located in the Brittany region of France and is one of the most popular historical sites in the Côtes-d'Armor department. Situated about 8.5 kilometers south of the town of Lanvollon, the castle stands in a lush, overgrown natural setting and is one of the most impressive medieval fortresses in France.

The current Château de Tonquedec was built in the 15th century on the ruins of an earlier fortress dating back to the early 12th century. The castle changed hands several times until 1577, when it became an artillery base. During the French Wars of Religion, it served as a hiding place for the Huguenots. It was eventually demolished around 1622 under the orders of Cardinal Richelieu, the chief minister to King Louis XIII of France. Today, the castle ruins belong to the descendants of the family who originally built it. Since 1862, the site has been listed as a historical monument by the French Ministry of Culture.

From the rugged cliffs, you can view the entire structure of the Château de Tonquedec. This ruin features eleven towers and a surrounding wall, situated at the heart of its river valley, making it a true relic of the Breton feudal system. The Château de Tonquedec is open to the public from April through October and is also available for film shoots, photography, and other events.
