Saint-Malo

Saint-Malo is located in the Ille-et-Vilaine department of Brittany in northwestern France and serves as the subprefecture of the department. The area was once a historic fortress and an important military port, and today it is a major tourist destination.

Saint-Malo attracts visitors from around the world with its city walls built to defend against pirates, beautiful beaches, well-preserved old town, towering Saint-Malo Cathedral, spectacular Château de Saint-Malo, the Solidor Tower built between 1369 and 1382, the large aquarium opened in 1996, and scenic natural parks. The museums housed in the Old Castle and the Solidor Tower showcase not only Saint-Malo’s long history and the Breton sailors’ exploration of Cape Horn but also feature nautical instruments, models, precious paintings, and other artworks crafted by the sailors.
