Quimper

Quimper is a town in northwestern France, the capital of Finistère department in the Brittany region. It is located at the confluence of the Odet and Steir rivers, 16 kilometers south of the Atlantic Ocean. The town is famous for its pottery production, with ceramics being a major local industry that dates back to the late 17th century. Today, it is a city with a thriving tourism industry. René Laënnec, the inventor of the stethoscope, was born here.

The Quimper Cathedral is the most famous local attraction, a Roman Catholic church and an important cultural heritage site in the Brittany region. Unlike other Gothic cathedrals, its center is slightly curved to align with the contours of its location. Nearby, the Fine Arts Museum, housed in an Italian-style palace, the Musée de la Faïence showcasing the region’s colorful pottery craftsmanship, and the Brittany Museum are key places to explore the area’s history, archaeology, art, and social life.
