Angers Castle

Angers Castle is a large medieval fortress in Angers, France, perched on rocks along the Maine River. Due to its strategic defensive location, it was once one of the settlements of the Romans. Built between 1230 and 1240, the main structure of the castle rises 30 meters high, with the castle and fortifications intersecting in a highly rugged terrain, one side facing the Loire River while the other three sides are protected by 17 towering towers and a one-kilometer-long wall that makes the castle nearly impenetrable.

The castle has a perimeter of 600 meters and covers an area of 25,000 square meters. Its 17 massive towers were once as high as 40 meters, but their height was later reduced to accommodate cannons, with only the Mill Tower retaining its original height. In the 13th century, the young Saint Louis built this castle on the edge of his kingdom. From the Neolithic Age to the 21st century, both its appearance and function have continuously evolved, leaving indelible marks from every period. The functions of the castle have also changed over time—from a military fortress housing troops, to a leisure villa for the Dukes of Anjou, and then to a prison. Angers Castle tells us a series of dramatic and fascinating stories.

Today, this massive fortress has been converted into a museum, and its most eye-catching attraction is the “Apocalypse Tapestry,” the castle’s crown jewel, which measures 107 meters long and 4.5 meters wide. It is the largest and oldest medieval tapestry in the world, embroidered with over a thousand flowers, making it extremely precious. This tapestry was commissioned by the first Count of Anjou, the first lord of the castle, and depicts the biblical theme of the “End of the World.”
