Fontenay-le-Comte is a commune in the Vendée department of the Pays de la Loire region in France, and also serves as the sub-prefecture of the department. It is a city known for producing many notable figures, with the famous mathematician François Viète and the zoologist Mathurin Jacques Brisson both born here. In addition, the French writer François Rabelais officially became a monk at the Mont-Saint-Martin Abbey in this city.
