Saumur

Saumur is a commune in the Maine-et-Loire department in western France, situated in the Loire Valley between the Loire River and the Thouet River. It is renowned for its distinctive wines and equestrian culture.

Saumur has a rich cultural heritage and was the setting of French writer Honoré de Balzac’s novel *Eugénie Grandet*. The Armored Museum (Musée des Blindés) features more than 880 armored vehicles, mostly from France, along with tanks from Brazil, Germany, the former Soviet Union, and the Allied and Axis countries of World War II.

Among its many historical landmarks, the most famous is the Château de Saumur, built in the late 11th century. Overlooking the city and the beautiful Loire River, it has served as a fortress, a leisure villa, a prison, and an ammunition depot. Today, it houses the Musée de la Ville de Saumur, which boasts an extensive collection of decorative arts from the 14th to the 18th centuries. Additionally, visitors can explore churches and monasteries in various architectural styles, handicraft museums, and beautiful parks.
