Nahanni National Park is located near Fort Simpson in Canada’s Northwest Territories, covering an area of 4,770 square kilometers. The park is world-renowned for its fast-flowing rivers, deep canyons, naturally formed stone pillars, and tundra-covered mountaintops. Its geological formations are truly striking, featuring water-carved caves, meandering ancient river channels towering hundreds of meters above the water, as well as delicate, erosion-resistant rock spires known as the “Fairy Chimneys” perched on the bedrock — all rare geological wonders. Underground rivers crisscross the landscape in a dense, web-like network. There are numerous caves adorned with stalactites and stalagmites, including the Sheep’s Corridor, which houses the remains of large numbers of sheep that died thousands of years ago.

The entire park features complex terrain and diverse landforms, making it a masterpiece of nature. Nahanni National Park is also a mineral-rich region, with discovered deposits including tungsten, copper, zinc, as well as marble, granite, and diamonds. Along the lower reaches of the South Nahanni River, there are sulfur-rich hot springs where boaters can easily pull ashore for a warm soak. The downstream area also contains numerous lakes formed by limestone sinkholes, some reaching depths of 20 to 30 meters. The park provides an excellent habitat for a wide variety of rare animals, including birds.

In the high mountains, agile Dall sheep and mountain goats can be spotted. In the forests of the plateaus and slopes, grizzly bears and gray wolves roam, while woodland caribou appear from time to time. Canoeing through the park, visitors may see moose and beavers. The park is also home to nearly 200 species of birds, including the rare and endangered peregrine falcon and golden eagle.
