Ekati Diamond Mine
The Ekati Diamond Mine is Canada’s first open-pit and underground diamond mine, located in the Northwest Territories. It is known as the “twin mine” with the nearby Diavik Diamond Mine, just a stone’s throw away.
The Ekati Diamond Mine lies just 200 kilometers south of the Arctic Circle. The surrounding area features a cold climate and an exceptionally tough environment. Getting to the mine requires traveling along perilous icy roads, but the immense profits still draw people to work under such harsh conditions. Statistics show that between 1998 and 2009 alone, miners extracted 45 million carats (approximately 8,000 kilograms) of diamonds from this site. Yet behind the enormous profits lies a deep scar on the Earth — visible even from space today, it is truly alarming.
