Yellowknife

The capital of Canada's Northwest Territories. Located 450 km south of the Arctic Circle, on the northwest shore of Great Slave Lake at the mouth of the Yellowknife River. It was named after the Yellowknife Dene, who lived north of Great Slave Lake. The population is 9,500. Immigration began after gold was discovered nearby in 1934, and new gold deposits were found again in 1944. It is now the largest town in the Northwest Territories, serving as a trade and transportation hub. It is also a center for gold mining. The town has a civilian airport and is connected to southern Canada by highway. It boasts numerous sports facilities, particularly well-known for its golf tournaments.
