Old Town Lunenburg

Old Town Lunenburg is one of the best examples of a British colonial town in North America. Established in 1753, it preserves an intact original layout and well-maintained exterior, with the overall urban structure laid out in a rectangular grid that mimics British homeland city planning. Residents have strived to maintain the town’s harmony and unity, preserving its wooden structures, some built in the 18th century and most in the 19th century.

The streets of the ancient town of Lunenburg are straight, and all street corners are square—this is a living example of British colonial policy. The old town contains about 400 major buildings, 70% of which were built in the 18th or 19th centuries. Nearly all the buildings are made of wood, and many houses are painted in bright colors.
