Established in 1936, Cape Breton Highlands National Park is located in the northern part of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada. It borders the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Gulf of St. Lawrence to the west, covering a total area of 949 square kilometers. The park is renowned for its spectacular highland and ocean scenery.

The Cape Breton Highlands are the most prominent part of the northern region of Cape Breton. Steep cliffs and deep river gorges surrounded by forests form the highland boundary of the Atlantic. One-third of the Cabot Trail runs through the coastal areas of the highland national park, making it a world-famous scenic highway. It is a well-known whale-watching destination in Canada, attracting large numbers of whales every year, creating a spectacular sight that draws visitors from around the world.

Cape Breton Highlands National Park is one of the largest wild nature reserves in Nova Scotia and one of the most outstanding parks in Canada’s national park system for landscape conservation. The park protects part of the Acadian Highlands coastal natural region, which is a mixed forest of hardwoods and softwoods. This forest extends from the Great Lakes region through New England all the way to the Canadian coast. The park’s mountains, forests, rivers, lakes, and coasts are home to many precious species from both southern and northern Canada, including mammals, birds, fish, amphibians, reptiles, and invertebrates. Arctic alpine plants from the last Ice Age can also be found here.

The park features steep coastal cliffs, dense forests, crisscrossing streams and valleys, and a variety of birds and animals. Visitors exploring the park feel as though they are in a primeval forest — an experience that is both thrilling and fascinating.
