The Fortress of Louisbourg is located on Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, Canada, and is a Canadian National Historic Site. Today, visitors can explore a reconstructed 18th-century French military fortress, albeit at just one-quarter the size of the original — making it the largest reconstructed 18th-century French fort in North America.

Built in 1713 and completed in 1745, the fortress witnessed two historic sieges, particularly the 1758 battle, which marked a turning point in the struggle between Britain and France for dominance. Back in 1745, this French-built fortress quickly became the third busiest harbor in North America after Boston and Philadelphia, but it was later destroyed during the Anglo-French War in 1760.

In 1961, Canada launched one of the most significant reconstruction projects in North America, deciding to rebuild this iconic 18th-century French fortress of New France. Due to the immense scale of the original, it was reproduced at a 1:5 ratio, yet the rebuilt site still vividly showcases life in the 18th century. Today, the Fortress of Louisbourg stands as a national historic monument, a living testament to the 18th century, and the largest reconstructed historical military structure in Canada.
