Sambro Island Lighthouse

Sambro Island Lighthouse is located on a small island at the entrance of Halifax Harbour in Nova Scotia. Built in 1758 during the Seven Years' War, it is the oldest surviving lighthouse in North America and was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1937.

Originally standing at 60 feet, two additional levels were added in 1906, bringing its height to 82 feet. It was automated in 1988. Due to its location at Halifax Harbour, the Sambro Island Lighthouse has witnessed the wrecks of numerous ships and various wartime events. During World War I and World War II, German submarines sank several vessels nearby, making it both a witness and a survivor of history. Having endured over 250 years of storms and change, the lighthouse still operates today, guiding ships safely through the waters.
