Thunderbird Park

Introduction

Thunderbird Park is a large outdoor exhibition area of Indigenous culture. In addition to displaying Indigenous totem poles, the park features a row of long, low wooden houses, which are traditional Indigenous structures known as "longhouses."

In 1940, the Indigenous totem poles in Thunderbird Park were all precious collections from the museum. To recreate an Indigenous living environment, they were placed in this corner of the park. After about 10 years, to prevent these valuable artworks from being exposed to long-term weathering, the authorities decided to move the originals into the museum and carve identical replicas of the totems and displays, which were then placed in the park for public viewing.   Transportation
