Hatley Castle

Hatley Castle (Hatley Castle) is located in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, and is a classic example of federal architecture in the area. It is part of the Hatley Park National Historic Site. The castle is situated on the campus of Royal Roads University, approximately 37 kilometers west of downtown Victoria. Spanning 650 acres, the castle overlooks Esquimalt Lagoon and offers views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the Olympic Mountains in Washington State.

Hatley Castle was commissioned in 1908 by James Dunsmuir, the former Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, whose father, Robert Dunsmuir, was a coal tycoon in Victoria. The castle was designed by Victoria-based architect Samuel Maclure, with gardens and surrounding landscapes created by renowned horticultural artists from Boston and Massachusetts. The interior features high-quality materials such as oak and mahogany paneling, grand and luxurious yet comfortable fireplaces, teak floors, and custom-designed lighting, all reflecting opulence. The castle measures 200 feet in length, 86 feet in width, and its towers rise 82 feet high. The surrounding high walls are constructed from local stone. The elegant architectural design, luxurious interiors, and beautifully landscaped gardens attract many visitors interested in exploring the life of Victoria’s elite during the early 20th century.
