Highlights　A castle with panoramic views of Otago Harbour.　Introduction　Larnach Castle is located on the Otago Peninsula and is the only castle in New Zealand. The castle was built by William Larnach for his first wife, Eliza Jane Guise. It features forty-three rooms and a grand ballroom. Its magnificent carvings, intricate stonework, woodwork, plasterwork, and glassware are outstanding. Construction began in 1871, and after five years of work by two hundred laborers, the family moved in. A further eleven years were spent on interior decoration by European craftsmen using materials sourced from around the world. Tip: William Larnach served as a minister in the British colonial government and was also a banker, capitalist, and business magnate.
