　 Highlights: This is the breeding ground of the royal albatross, and it is the only mainland breeding site for royal albatrosses in the world. Here you can also see the “Armstrong Disappearing Gun.” This gun emplacement was used as a defense installation during both World Wars and was originally built in 1880 to guard against a possible Russian invasion.　 Introduction: Taiaroa Head on the Otago Peninsula was once an important fortress of Pukekura in the 18th century. The local population grew due to harbor work, coastal defense, and prison labor projects.
