Dunedin Chinese Garden

The Dunedin Chinese Garden is named “Lan Yuan” (Orchid Garden). Built in 2008, it is a garden full of stories, a uniquely charming garden, a vibrant and colorful garden, and also the most authentic Chinese garden in the Southern Hemisphere. The garden reflects the sentiments of overseas Chinese in commemorating history and honoring ancestors, expressing their connection to China.

The Dunedin Chinese Garden is a garden designed in the style of a Suzhou-style classical garden. It does not incorporate modern mixed-style elements, and the landscape is primarily constructed using traditional Oriental methods of classical Chinese architecture. At the entrance of the garden stands a traditional Chinese paifang (decorative archway) with dark eaves, upturned corners, and two clearly inscribed golden Chinese characters reading “Lan Yuan,” all exuding an ancient Chinese charm. Although it looks somewhat different from Western architecture, it blends in ingeniously, perfectly merging the classical beauty of China with the modern aesthetics of the West. Once inside the garden, it feels as if you have stepped into the Jiangnan region of China — clear water, rockeries, plants, pavilions, ponds, and waterside pavilions vividly showcase the characteristics of Jiangnan-style gardens. It is said that the stones in the garden and the koi in the pond were all transported from China, ensuring an authentic Chinese touch.

The Dunedin Chinese Garden represents outstanding traditional Chinese culture and ancient Chinese garden artistry. It plays a significant role in strengthening cultural dissemination, promoting cultural exchange, and expanding the influence of traditional Chinese culture and art.
