Cradle Mountain

Cradle Mountain is located within the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park in northern Tasmania. It is a truly magical mountain range, and its name comes from its undulating, cradle-like shape.

At 1,545 meters, Cradle Mountain is not especially tall, but it is extremely rugged, and reaching the summit is no easy task. The mountain has four main peaks, ranked by height as follows: Cradle Mountain Summit, Smithies Peak, Wombat Tower, and Little Horn. What makes Cradle Mountain so magical is that different altitudes offer varied landscapes, allowing visitors to experience the changes of all four seasons—spring, summer, autumn, and winter. The foothills are warm and home to distinctive plants such as deciduous beech, rainforest, and sycamore trees. As you climb higher, the atmosphere turns autumnal and slightly cooler. Closer to the summit, you’ll feel the arrival of winter, and may even see snowflakes drifting through the sky.

Another remarkable feature of Cradle Mountain is its profound tranquility—you can even hear your own breathing when it’s quiet, reflecting the deep sense of serenity that pervades the area.
